Samantha’s Fight for Survival

Deep in the Bornean rainforest, Samantha is doing everything she can to survive. Born into the Penan tribe, a once nomadic people, she and her community have struggled to adapt after being forced to settle when their jungle—their source of food, shelter, and even medical care—was logged by foreign corporations. The few dollars they received in compensation have done little to alleviate the looming problems they now face. Hunting and gathering were their way of life—now, they must grow their own food. But the land is unforgiving, and survival is never guaranteed.

Samantha works relentlessly, growing okra, pumpkins, and long beans—not just to feed her family but to keep going. Her mother, Supang, has stood by her side, offering support despite undergoing multiple eye treatments. Every day is a battle, but they keep pushing forward.

Beyond farming, Samantha weaves. Her hands create intricate Elfin miniature bags, delicate yet strong—just like her. Some were made for custom orders, bringing in much-needed income. But weaving alone isn’t enough. The Penan people need food, stability, and hope.

Jacky, the founder of Borneo Bags, has been a lifeline, teaching Samantha and others how to make compost and grow seedlings—skills essential for survival. It’s a slow, difficult process, but every seed planted, every bag woven, is a step toward making it through another day.

This isn’t about thriving. This is about survival.
